    I will leave that one to the experts I think! I would suggest Boer War, but that is a pure guess!

    BEF does stand for British Expeditionary Force.
    Is he your Grand Dad? You could try and look up his records at The National Archives (TNA). First World War Medal Cards are available from them on line. It depends on whether he had a fairly common name as to how easy it is to do.
    I guess it to be WWI and looking at his apparent age, I would concentrate on Army Units serving in the Middle East and Gallipoli. Try Googling "Great War Forum" and "Regiments of the British Army" and try cross referencing with the TNA info. If you can get to, or get someone to look for you at Kew it may well be possible to get his Service Records.
