John Hawker family 1700s

Can anyone identify this Hawker family for me?

John Hawker had two daughters, Mary and Elizabeth.

Mary Hawker married John David Ziegel at St.Thomas the Apostle, Exeter on 3 January 1746. They had two daughters, Mary who married Rev.Henry Mugg of Chudleigh, and Elizabeth who married Nicholas Phene of London, an Upholsterer. Mary (Hawker) Ziegel died in Chudleigh in 1811.

Elizabeth Hawker married Rev. Nicholas Cross at Ottery St.Mary on 18 March 1757. They settled in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, and Elizabeth died there in 1804.

John Hawker died in Trowbridge, Wilts. in 1780, but was not from there. He was described as a Gentleman, and left over £6000 in his will, shared between the families of his two daughters. From the information given above, I believe he was from Devon.

As a result of the information you have given me I have established that the John Hawker of Trowbridge who is in my family tree was a Grocer/Linen Draper from Exeter who was the son of James Hawker of Luppitt and married a Mary Brinley. His sister was the Elizabeth Hawker who married Nicholas Munkley in 1718 and following his death in 1730 she married John Duntze in 1733. When Elizabeth Duntze died in 1777 she left legacies to her brother John Hawker and to her nieces Mrs Ziegel and Mrs Cross who were John Hawker's children. So her Will is a link between James Hawker of Luppitt and John Hawker of Trowbridge.

There was another John Hawker in Exeter at the time who was married to May Rowe and was a Haberdasher and it is his details which I included in my previous note.

The information you gave me has enabled me to make some significant changes to my tree and has opened up a whole new field for research.

In particular the identity of James Hawkers wife Susanna remains a mystery and I would welcome any information on this.

Hi Michael, I have in my possession a late 18th century sampler with, unusually, 3 names upon it. It is the work of 3 people of which the middle person is Mary Zeigel Mugg (dated 1790). Before her work, a few lines up is the stitched moniker of S Mugg. At the very bottom of the sampler, 34 years later (dated 1824) is the name of Mary Anne Mugg. Could you possibly shine any light on this, as you seem to be my main line of information.

I have only just picked up this question.

Mary Ziegel married the Rev Henry Mugg of Chudleigh in Feb 1779 - they had one daughter called Sarah born in 1782 and another called Mary Ziegel born in 1781. Mary Ziegel was my 5th great grandmother.

This was Henry Mugg's second marriage - his first wife produced a son called Henry Holman Mugg who had a daughter called Mary Ann Mugg who was born in 1811.

I hope this answers the question but I can supply more information if required.

I know this thread is a few years old....but here goes!

I believe that John David Zeigel was a subscriber to the fund that paid for the founding of the Dissenters' graveyard in Exeter and that he was buried in the same graveyard in 1781. We also have a record of an Ann Ziegel (d. 9 June 1754) buried in the graveyard.

I'd be delighted to know more about the Zeigel family of Exeter. The graveyard website is www.edgt.org.uk

Welcome to British-Genealogy.

As you rightly noted, this thread is several years old, and all of the original posters are no longer forum members (as noted by the word 'guest' under their usernames) and we have no contact details for them.

I found the graveyard website interesting and have added it to the 'Devon resources' sticky at the top of the Devon forum.

I presume that you might already have some information about the Zeigel family, so if you'd like to post that, and then add what else you'd like to find out I'm sure our sleuths will see what they can find.

It was a long shot!
As you probably gathered, we are conducting research on people buried in the Exeter Dissenters' graveyard from 1748 to 1854 and their families. I've only just started work on the Ziegels, and I'll certainly post something about them in the next few days.
We're very happy to share information on the families we've researched, so I appreciate you adding the website to the Resources page.
