Default On Line Sources for South African Genealogy

The first port of call is the National Archives of South Africa. For some reason direct links to their website do not work from here, but if you do a Google search the first hit is National Archives of South Africa (NASA) Database Selection. Click on RSA for all records to be included in your search, or limit yourself to a particular archive, such as KAB (Cape), NAB (Natal), TAB (Transvaal) or VAB (Free State).

NB that death notices are extremely useful documents compared to English death certificates. They give details of birth and parentage where known, details of spouse, list all the children including the married names of daughters and indicate whether the deceased owned property. See this thread for looking at Death Notices online.

Digital copies of documents in the Cape Archives (wills, death notices etc) can be ordered with a NASA reference at very reasonable cost from www.eggsa.org, the virtual branch of the Genealogical Society of South Africa. (Follow instructions in FAQ under Document Ordering Service on the home page. It is not necessary to be a member although the costs are even cheaper for members. The eGGSA site also has photographs of many graves. At present they cannot provide documents from Cape Town because of a digital camera ban.

Transcriptions of many BMDs from newspapers can be searched at https://www.eggsa.org/newspapers/

A lot of original images of South African parish registers are now available free on Family Search

There is now a new list for South Africa at https://groups.io/g/southafricangenealogy

https://www.1820settlers.com/ is a site devoted to the descendants of the 1820 settlers to the Cape of Good Hope.

A useful series of YouTube videos by Matthew Bode on how to search South African records online can be found at here.

There are also several very active Facebook groups dedicated to South African genealogy.

A page of useful links has been added to the eGGSA site here.

I have added a page of useful links from the eGGSA site to the main posting above. This includes some links to useful books on Family Search, including Esme Bull's "Aided Immigration from Britain to South Africa 1857-1867", which can be viewed here.
