    Are all the births uncertain?

Do you know which regiment he was with?

I have the Regimental Births on CD and can do a lookup.

    Hi Ann,

I can only find one Ethel Barnes born in 1888:

    Barnes Ethel, Woolwich, 1888 R.A. Vol 1455 Page 49

My understanding is that R.A. is Royal Artillery and that R.H.A. is Royal Horse Artillery. There are no births of an Ethel Barnes to the R.H.A in the time frame.

    Free BMD has this birth:

    June Q 1888

    Barnes Ethel Woolwich 1d 1195

Ooh, I do hate these army men, because half the time they're abroad - with their families! - at census time and are soooo difficult to find.
    Going in reverse...
Ann, Do you know when Walter or Eliza/Elizabeth died? If so, the age at death will be on the GRO Index. Although the accuracy of the age at death depends on how well the informant knew the deceased, it might prove/disprove how near to the truth the birth date of c1871 is.
Also, although auntie says Walter was born in Gedney Dyke, if she's still alive, then I'd double-check if she actually knew he was born there, as opposed to knowing that he lived there.

Are there any RHA births at Woolwich? I wondering whether there would be any distinction for this purpose. There wouldn't be a separate RHA facility at Woolwich.

In other words, I suspect this birth is worth ordering.
