Default WW 1 - help needed - how do I start????

Have learned from a relative that my grand father, Walter Eaton, was in WW1 and mentioned in despatches. He was living in the Audlem, Cheshire area. He was apparantly gassed, though survived. He was in some kind of messenger/communications section but this is all I know. Sorry. Can anyone please help me and give me some ideas of where to start??? He was born 1898. Have never researched this area before but am hoping to get some ideas and good advice from members. His two sons, my father an uncle, are alive and would give permission if needed to access records - just dont know where to apply or anything. Are despatches listed on internet anywhere??? All help greatly appreciated.

To see what survives in WW1 army records, see TNA's web-site research guides
    https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/c...sindex.asp?j=1
click on 'B' and look at the links prefixed 'British Army'.

See if you can find his medal card:
    https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/
click on 'family history' on the left of the screen and then 'WW1 Campaign Medals'

Does he appear in the National Roll of the Great War? It isn't complete, but there are a large number of entries, it can be found on the pay-per-view site find my past.

The best place to start is by reading through some of the messages in this section.

    Otherwise, read this -

    https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/c...LeafletID=18#4

It explains among other thngs that you can find out his regiment from the medal index cards available online. You may be able to get what you need from the index without actually downloading the card,
