Smile Of this she won a considerable

Thank you so much every one, I did get a lot of it but not the bit about winning the money.

I wonder at what?? What sort of things would women be involved in to win money?

Later she left F T Howse (and children) apart from her daughter and emigrated to the USA, obviously paying her own way.

    Thanks again Julie

One of course could be cynical (tut tut) and say that possibly the money was only in her name as a means of not paying the husband's debtors, and 'winning money' was a ruse and no way of tracing? I read the name as House as well, not Howse by the way. But of course, you would know if it's your grandfather.

Yes, you could be right. Frederick Howse (the man in question) did try to sell the business to his 9 year old son. The court didn't take kindly to that, I wonder why!

I know this is a giant leap of faith, but could the winnings possibly have come from 'the Oaks'? I know it doesn't look anything like an 'O' at the beginning, but it could certainly have been a way of winning money - if you were lucky
    Best wishes
    Ann
