Default Techno info re: Images please

Could someone please give this `little old lady' some assistance!

Although I didn't want graphics on my web site, as it is really an information site, I wanted to add the Coastguards badge at the top of my Home Page. A current Coastguard friend, sent me a couple of jpeg images. I decided on the one I wanted, but found it was too large. I positioned it at the top of my Home page and reduced it to a satisfactory size and saved it. But...it had a white square border which I didn't want, so I looked up (in a book very kindly sent to me by a Forum member) how to make a colour transparent in a graphic. It did say when I updated it, that the size could become larger. It seemed fine to me and didn't appear to have changed size, so I uploaded to my site. When I went to look at it, I just had the box with the red X in it!!
Doh!! Forgot I need to upload the image!! I uploaded the image, which didn't change anything at all!! Doh!! I changed the image from within my Home page, so the original image would still have been large, and presumably not compatible with what I saved!! Now to my problem.....

How do I reduce the original image that I received, before dragging it to my Home page, and when I set the transparent colour will it enlarge it again?
I will have to delete the one that didn't work on my site as I reduced it free hand and don't know what the actual size was, so better to start afresh.

I have left it with the non-operable square, so that you can see where I am going to put the badge:

I'd be grateful if you could be fairly `specific' as I'm still a newbie at this.

    Thanks.

I have just had another look at the images that were sent to me originally. There were two black/white and two colour. I elected to use the black/white as it goes better with my grey background.

I have only just discovered that there were 2 jpeg and two pdf files. The pdf looked clearer and I now know that I used the pdf file which was originally 60.1 kb. The jpeg file is 303kb, 766x1183. Obviously much too large as I don't want larger than about two inches.

Hope this extra bit of info may be of some help.

The code for your page says that it should display a picture called CGblack.gif
If you uploaded a jpeg, that would not be the correct name for the file
I would have a look what the picture was called (perhaps it was CGblack.jpg ?) and change the name of the picture in the code here -
    <img border="0" src="CGblack.gif" width="83" height="112"

Just a first thought It may be something else wrong of course.
On reducing the image size of a jpeg, there are several good free tools out there. If using Windows, I would recommend Irfanview. Linux users will probably have The Gimp

Thanks Mark, I forgot to look at the code to see if it differed

The image I used was originally a pdf. Whilst trying to save it to my Images file, I think it was saved as a jpg, which is why the code says CGblack.jpg.
Obviously when I altered the transparency, it saved it as a gif, which is what the images usually are, aren't they?

I will alter the code, and see what happens.

    Thank you very much.

Usually web images are saved as jpeg (or jpg - its exactly the same). gif is more used for animated logos etc. Nothing to stop you using gif for static images - just that jpeg is the more usual format
If you don't want to resize the image yourself, I am happy to do it for you if it will help. Just let me know if you do. Irfanview, which I mentioned, is easy to use and very handy for all sorts of image work. Just don't let it set itself as the default image viewer if you normally use some other program! Although it can be changed, its easier just to say no during the install

    Sorry, we crossed posted.

I tried to change the code, but it didn't seem to work, so I will delete the one on my site and start again.

I think (?) that the images should be gif rather than jpg but I am not sure. I will have a play around and see what I can do. It's trying to reduce the size of the original and saving to my images file, before I download to my site that is causing me the problem.

    Thanks for your input.

OK, lets see if I can be of some help here.

    first off

PDF: PDF stands for Portable Document Format, PDF's are documents not images.

JPG or JPEG:full-color or grayscale photographic images, often for use on the Web. JPG is "lossy," meaning that the decompressed image is not quite of the same quality as the original image.

GIF:GIFs typically display in 256 colors and have built-in compression. Static or animated GIF images are the most common form of banner creative.

OK, here it is in english

JPG's have a large colour palette(millions of colours) use JPG's for photographs, whether colour, sepia or greyscale.

GIF's only have a 256 colour palette, but support transparency and can be animated. Use gif's for banners or images were palette depth (number of colours) is minimal or when you need to use transparency.

Thanks for that info Blain, that has answered a lot of questions.

Due to Mark's help, I now have sorted my problem out. (I think)

    Default Re-sizing images

For a quick (and fairly clean) resize, I recommend you try A Smaller Image https://tinyurl.com/czoee. It's user-friendly, you can download a trial, and full program only costs $15.00.
