I would be very grateful for a lookup of the 1841 or 1851 census for Rye, Sussex please.
In 1841 looking for George b. circa 1804 & Elizabeth Pain(e) b. circa 1803 & children Elizabeth b. 1837, George b. 1828, Frank b. 1834, Edmund b. 1838, Silas b. 1840 & James b. 1844. Probably Red Lion St or Lion St. George was a painter/plumber/glazier.
In 1851 looking for Elizabeth (widowed) & one or more of above children. Probably still Red Lion Street.
Thanks very much!

*I'm not sure about the letters in parentheses after "Painter"... whether the first character is "I" or "1" and if the word after that is really "Hand".

Thanks Trish
Thanks so much Trish...this info both confirms and adds to what I know allready. The 1/I hand is intriguing!

Had a look at the image - I think it is a no. 1 (or just a slash) and 'hand'. Perhaps she painted pottery or small decorative items by hand. There is a present-day pottery in Rye, but I don't know if it is that old. Just a thought.

Thanks for further comments all. Another source suggests that the "hand" may refer to an employee.
