I am trying to locate a family on the 1861 census who were in Urr in 1851.
James McKie, a shepherd, wife Janet and four children . No sign of them in 1861 or 1871.
have done all the usual variations allowable on Scotlands people, but come up a blank. Urr Parish records have no deaths between 1851 and 1854 so cant check that, and epidemics apart, is that likely ?
the next possibility is migration. No sign of them in England and Wales, which leaves abroad. Has anyone any knowledge of the extent of emigration from these parts 1851-1861 ?
Cheers..Ed

Can you give us the details from the 1851 census - ages, names of children, places of birth, etc.? It would help us help you find them...

Took a quick look in 1861 just to see...
Here in Montreal, there's a street spelled McKay but pronounced McK-'eye' which got me to thinking about alternative spellings for McKie.
In 1861, there's a James McKae, age 60, living with 25-yr-old daughter Jane. Occupation is unreadable, but places of birth are both Urr, Kirkcudbrightshire. The record is at: c1861 884/00 003/00 012Z.
Might this be they?

On 4 July, 1856: Archibald McKie (farm servant, age 25) m: Elizabeth McKie (cook, age 24) in the parish of Urr, Kirkcudbright. Archibald's parents are listed as James McKie, farm overseer, and Janet McKie, maiden name (looks like) Payase. His address is given as Culquha, Tongland, Kirkcudbright.

In 1861, Archibald and Elizabeth have 2 sons: Robert, age 4, and James, age 2, and are living in Park Cottage, Tongland, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland.
What were the other children's (of James and Janet) names?

McKies in Urr
Debbie, thanks for all your efforts whilst I have been away.
To answer your first question.
1851 census
The old Military Road to Dumfries, Urr.
Name: McKIE , Janet
Relationship: head of household Marital Status: married Occupation: SHEPHERD (wife of)
Age: 30 Born: born Kelton Kbt
Name: McKIE , Mary
Relationship: daughter of Janet McKie Occupation: SCHOLAR Age: 7 Born: born Urr Kbt
Name: McKIE , William
Relationship: son of Janet McKie Age: 4
Born: born Urr Kbt
Name: McKIE , John
Relationship: son of Janet McKie
Age: 2 Born: born Urr Kbt
----------------------------------------------
Name: McKIE , James
Address: Port Mary Farmhouse(879)
Parish: Rerrick
Relationship: visitor in household of Thomas Irving
Marital Status: married
Occupation: SHEPHERD
Age: 33
Born: born Urr Kbt
So that is the family on 1851 census.
A son Peter McKie born 2 December 1855 is recorded as Janet's seventh child, 3 boys alive and 2 girls alive with one girl deceased.
The composition of the family would then be somewhat different in 1861
What I am trying to do is to establish if this Peter McKie is the one who joined the army in Dumfries in 1871. So I need to know if the family stayed in the area, or indeed in Scotland untill that time.
I will now go back and digest your recent messages to see if any fit.
Cheers..Ed

Found a death certificate for Jane McKie, maiden name Pagan. This looks like the mother of Archibald. Was Archibald your James' brother (Peter's uncle?).
Death was 5 Jan 1871, Twynholm, Kirkcudbright. Listed as widow of James, Cotman. Address Cambellton Cothouse. Age at death:80, parents: Thomas and Jane Pagan - Thomas was a farmer, both deceased. Cause of death: Chronic bronchitis, asthma, coma. Verified by daughter: Janet Allan.
Most likely, this is the wrong family, but you never know...

There's a death for James McKie, age 49 in 1867, in Dumfries:
Married at time of death to Janet (looks like) Sardist? Date of death: 29 Oct 1867. Parents: Samuel (deceased) and Helen McKie (maiden name Walls). Died of Pleurisy. Verified by Margaret McKie, sister.
The age fits, but...
