Forum: Navigating Brit-Gen

If you have any problems posting a query, or just need to ask a question or two about finding your way around the forum, this is the place to do it.

Will all members please make sure that they have read the Terms and Conditions pertaining to BG. These can be found on the blue banner at the foot of the page. Moderators do use a bit of discretion when it comes to links to other websites, but be aware that often seemingly free websites have...

  2. Sticky Thread Sticky: If you have arrived via FWR forum links

If you've come to us via the FWR forum links, please take a look at Sue's sticky (ie fixed at the top of a forum) message that you reach by clicking HERE. It explains how the British Genealogy Forum works. I would also add to what Sue says that you can often find useful information by looking at...

Those members of Forces War Records who have clicked on Free Forum should be aware that they are now on the British Genealogy Forum. This forum is owned by FWR, but is a separate entity, and existed for some years before FWR took it over in 2013. Members should be aware when posting on British...

  4. Sticky Thread Sticky: Helping us to help you

If you're new to internet forums, I hope that this note will provide help in avoiding some of the common pitfalls in writing your queries. We often see messages saying something along the lines of: "I'm looking for my Grandfather, Kermit Macmuppet". For obvious reasons, it'll be pretty...

  6. Sticky Thread Sticky: Customising your Forum Options

Many newbies (and I suspect a lot of not so newbies) will have happily chugged along using the Forum Default Settings and will never have clicked on General Settings, located in the Forum Actions menu on the blue banner at the top, just below the tree. It is well worth clicking General Settings....

  7. Sticky Thread Sticky: Updating and Linking to Old Threads

Posting duplicate threads about the same person/family on different boards is not allowed, as it leads to confusion and duplication of effort, and such duplicate threads will be closed or deleted by the moderators. However, there has been a spate recently of members trying to re-visit brick...

  8. Sticky Thread Sticky: What is a Sticky??

As you navigate your way around the various forums, you will find that some of them are labelled Sticky. This means that, no matter how many posts are made on that forum, these particular posts will always remain at the top. Most of the Stickies contain very useful information which members may...

  1. Adding more posts to a thread once printed.

Under Thread Tools in the Banner one can read a version of a thread and print it. As this thread is now running to 10 pages, rather than print the whole again, I want to just print the additions. How do I do this? Colin

Hi all, Simon & I have returned the much awaited AUP/PP and ToS today and I have changed the ToS very marginally and I hope it will meet with approval. Basically the only changes I have made to the Terms of service are: 1. I have added another 'clause' asking members NOT to post personally...

  9. Limiting the search terms

In the brickwall section I tried to search by putting my ancestor's names in quotes as I was getting thousands of hits without doing that but the system rejected that. I couldn't see any advanced search mechanism to limit my search interest by exact name either. Am I missing something? Thanks
