Another really useful guide from Forces War Records – ‘How to search School records’ SEE: https://www.forces-war-records.co.uk/free-tutorials Whilst it’s exciting to find your ancestor recorded as a scholar, attending school or a similar phrase on the census, have you ever wondered what...

  2. Sticky Thread Sticky: School Admission Registers

School Admission Registers consist of two pages. A left-hand one with the child's name, address, date of birth, etc; and a right-hand one with various other notes - name of previous school, date of leaving, etc. When viewing online records you sometimes need to click 'next page' in order to...

  1. Essendon Orphanage School c.1882

Essendon Orphanage School catered for destitute children until it was burnt down in about 1882. Most pupils were moved to a similar institution in Kingsbury near Egdware. Does any know any dates or details about this?

  3. Old Felstedienses

I bought a little copy of Alumni Felstedienses today which lists the names of boys who entered the Felsted school from its foundation to 1903. The first headmaster was at the school in 1566, but the names of the pupils don't start until the 5th headmaster is at the school 1627 - 49. The...

  4. Question "London" School

My 5xg grandfather, George Heslop, was a Schoolmaster, and after my long investigations I believe that in the 1820s he may have been head of a school near the village of Newsham, North Yorkshire, called Earby Hall. (George died in 1841, just a couple of weeks before the census. He had been...

  5. Middlesex county industrial school

Hi, l've found my husband's GGrandfather in the Middlesex county industrial school in 1881, l've looked at his family in the same census and they all are together, so doesn't seem to be a problem with the family staying together, so l'm thinking maybe he was a naughty boy in some way he was only...

  8. Start of the School Year

A question for those of you slightly older than me! Has the School year started in a month other than September? I`m trying to puzzle how two ladies I know - born March 1944 & December 1944 could be in the same school year. If it was different when did it change? Thanks Mitch

  11. Question The Bootmaker's boy:

While I have been looking into my family's history a common thread has been that some of the sons became successful in ways their parents may not have foreseen. I suppose that's still true today but in the Georgian/Victorian era was it probably due to the increase in general education for ordinary...

  12. School ages

Does anyone know whether there was a standard age for attending / changing schools in the early 20th century? 17. George Liddell - Teacher in Glasgow

I'm trying to trace information on a relative of mine. His name was George Liddell and he was born in Glasgow in about 1843. He became a teacher in the city. How can I find out which schools he taught at? I know he was still a teacher in 1901, living at Elmbank Street in Glasgow. Can anyone...

  20. scholars c.1850

On an ancestor's census record of 1851, it states that he is a scholar. He lived in Bethnal Green at the time and I wondered if records were available to trace him. Also, his father was a printer and would he have had to pay for his son educations before school became free c1880?
