  1. St Mary's Industrial school for girls, Croydon, Surrey

On the 1911 census it shows my grandmother Jane Wheeler (born 1904) as being at this school in 1910 with her two sisters Florrie Wheeler and Louisa Wheeler. Has anyone got any information on how to find where the records for this school are kept? Yours very hopefully, Xumas

  3. Abbreviation in Clerkenwell Registers

I've spent a lot of time searching for a definition of an apparent abbreviation in the 16th century St. James, Clerkenwell baptismal registry, with no conclusion. The abbreviation appears to be 'Le' (Secretary hand) immediately after the father's name, and just before the baptismal date, of nearly...

  4. Catholic Marriage Registers & incomplete info

I have looked at a couple of differing Catholic Church marriage 'registers' pre 1870. One is handwritten in book form and contains no parents names. Another is a standard register book but again with the parents names blank throughout. Is the parent information likely to have been recorded and if...

  6. Orphanages

Has anyone heard of the St. Joseph and St. Anne Orphanage? In the 1901 census I came across a possible grand-uncle who was listed as an inmate. The orphanage was in the County of Kent in the Town of Farnborough.

  7. Staffordshire Catholic Records?

Hi all, Just wondered if anyone knew where I could find catholic records from Staffordshire? Any births, baptisms, deaths, burials or marriages? I think almost the entirety of my grandfather's paternal line is catholic, and I've exhausted all the census records!

  8. National Library of Ireland

If you have Irish relatives, there have been new uploads to the online resources at the Irish National Library. Baptismal and marriage records- mostly mid-19th century. One caution: you DO need to have a little information to start with. But I found several records very quickly with some good...

  9. Question Spanish Blood in Irish Ancestors?

My dad - William Bradley -seemed to believe that there was Spanish blood in our ancestry - (perhaps from The Armada or even from trade between Ireland and Spain.) We may even have Jewish blood too. Dad's mother (Mary Harrington) came from Kinsale Cork and ( I think) his father (James Bradley)...

  10. Where might this photo be? And Habit?

Does anyone have an idea if this habit is of the Sisters of Mercy? It is believed in the family that Elizabeth got to be a Mother Superior in a convent in England. Looking at the back of the photo it is stamped velox several times so probably dates from 1940-50s. Elizabeth...

  15. St Pelagia's Convent, Highgate 1956

I believe that the mother of my nephew gave birth to a daughter, in St Pelagia's convent in September 1956. Do any records of this 'Home for destitute Catholic mothers' still exist? Are they accessible online or in record offices? Even an admission register would help to confirm this!
