  17. Army Enlistment Age in 1882

My ancestor said he was 3 years old than he was when he enlisted in 1882. I thought men were more likely to say they were older, not younger. Does anyone know if it would have been an advantage to appear older than 18 but younger than 20 or 21? Thanks.
