  1. Sticky Thread Sticky: Will beneficiaries data base?

Just curious whether there is a database, as I couldn't see one on a web search. Although the pcc wills are now readily available, the benaficiaries are not indexed, as I just tested Ancestry with the benaficiary Richard Hopper SHREWSBURY (son of Abraham & Ann nee WESTON bap. 19 November 1788 at...

  2. Question Sticky Thread Sticky: Idiots Guide To Wills??

Does anyone know a good website with an 'idiots guide' to researching wills? I've never done much with them before (only looked at those for g-parents which were kept in the family). But now work has moved to central London |banghead| so popping in to the place in Holborn seems a more realistic...

  1. An odd sort of Will

I have an ancestor who was in the East India Company in India. I have found, on line, his Will. At least, it seems to be a 'draft' or 'model' of what he was going to make as his Will. It details his name and rank and that he leaves his estate equally to Edward the son of his first wife and to...

  2. Re-swearing of a Will

Why might a Will have to be re-sworn? I have found, in the National Probate Calendar, that the Will of Robert Swanton MASTERS 1840-1880, of Glastonbury, was first sworn on 25 November 1880. His effects were 'under 500'. His sole executrix was his older sister Elizabeth MASTERS, c1833-1910. ...

  3. How would 'the widow' inherit?

A long standing brickwall for me is Bertha Fleming and her 'husband' Charles. They were not married and Charles appears with her in electoral rolls in London as Charles Fleming or Charles Ernest Hawkins. He was a Hawkins but used the surname Fleming frequently. Charles is said (unreliable...

  4. Will written 1728 with codecil dated 1708?

:helpsmilie:I am hoping that someone can clear up the following mystery for me. William Gambold died in 13 Sept 1728 and in his will he made his wife, Elizabeth, and youngest son, George, the executors. At the foot of the will, under his signature and in very different handwriting there is a...

How often do Letters of Administration contain more information than that contained within the Probate Index? I have at least 6 or 7 ancestors who had Administrations granted and don't really want to pay for a copy of each one if there is no additional information, but I guess I won't know...

  10. Value of Estate in the Will

I have, over the years, purchased several Wills and always found them interesting and enlightening in terms of identifying a daughter's married name, 'lost' grandchildren, addresses and all sorts of speculation as to why something was left to someone. But, I don't understand the value of the...

  17. Strange!! Probate

Hi, I have just found a Probate on Ancestry and it says that Probate was granted to Lloyds Bank Ltd, what does this mean?? Is it because they owed money to the bank or was it because they had no heirs to inherit?? Probate was granted in 1958. Any help or ideas much appreciated.
