Forum: General Family History Queries

Although it is best to use specific forums for various topics, this one is for general topics that don't otherwise have a home.

  1. Sticky Thread Sticky: BG in Who Do You Think You Are Magazine

Afternoon all, Just a quick message to say BG got a small mention in the August edition of Who Do You Think You Are Magazine under the "Best Websites" section. A small victory for us all, and considering the top 3 were Rootschat with over 200,000 members and over 4 million posts, The Great...

  2. Sticky Thread Sticky: Important message for all forum members

People who research family history are very generous with their time and help, especially towards those new to research. This is great because it shows what a friendly bunch we all are. However, there are certain things which are not allowed and this includes breaching copyright or licence - At...

  3. Sticky Thread Sticky: General Family History

Hello folks. This is just a reminder that this forum exists. As well as general questions on family and local history; it's as good a board to use as any if you've 'lost' someone, somewhere and want to begin tracking them. I'm sure that you know the sort of thing I mean, an ancestor was...

  1. Need your opinions/experiences.

Hi All...Happy New Year. I just wanted some opinions or experiences on the following. I have a relative who was married in 1906. Their only child was born in 1920. So far I haven't come across such a long time between marriage and children. In fact, quite the opposite. Does anyone else have such a...

  2. Basing House

I have done a search and don't think I have asked this before (but have on Facebook a while back). In my research of Whittlesey I keep coming across a place called Basing House. At least 6 people died there between 1920 and 1932, and that is only information I have gleaned from church registers...

  4. Name change (Male)

9Have you set yourself targets or goals for your family history research for 2018? If not, now is the ideal time to review your work, review what you have already achieved and set yourself some new targets and goals for the next twelve months. I always like the idea of goals or targets, it...

  10. marriage witness minimum age ?

I seem to have a 14-year old girl acting as witness at her mother's second marriage. Is that at all unusual ? This was in 1826. I guess if at least one witness had to be a family member she might have been the only one available ?

  11. The surname ABEL. It is an ancient Jewish surname?

Hi According to many sources the surname Abel is Biblical. I have an Abel surname in my tree. Apparently it was bought to England by crusaders and Pilgrims returning from the Holy Land in about the 12th century. Does this mean that in many cases, the surname is ancient Jewish? Ben

I have posted previous threads about my grandfather Albert James Barnes born in Easthampstead in 1870. A male ancestor born in the mid 18th century married a woman from a nearby but not adjacent parish. Both parishes are named in the parish marriage record.
