Forum: General Family History Queries

Although it is best to use specific forums for various topics, this one is for general topics that don't otherwise have a home.

  1. Sticky Thread Sticky: BG in Who Do You Think You Are Magazine

Afternoon all, Just a quick message to say BG got a small mention in the August edition of Who Do You Think You Are Magazine under the "Best Websites" section. A small victory for us all, and considering the top 3 were Rootschat with over 200,000 members and over 4 million posts, The Great...

  2. Sticky Thread Sticky: Important message for all forum members

People who research family history are very generous with their time and help, especially towards those new to research. This is great because it shows what a friendly bunch we all are. However, there are certain things which are not allowed and this includes breaching copyright or licence - At...

  3. Sticky Thread Sticky: General Family History

Hello folks. This is just a reminder that this forum exists. As well as general questions on family and local history; it's as good a board to use as any if you've 'lost' someone, somewhere and want to begin tracking them. I'm sure that you know the sort of thing I mean, an ancestor was...

  1. Birth recorded twice different surname

Looking into my late mother-in-law's family history I've come across 2 records of her birth. Both with the same date, district and page number but 1 shows just "Iris Ivy Finlay" under the F's and the other "Iris Ivy Stuart Finlay" under the S's. Does this happen often?

  4. 'Visitor' on a census.

I will preface this with an "I know you can't take everything on the census as gospel, mistakes happened, etc", just pondering this conundrum. Looking at 1861 census (Piece: 307 Folio: 45 Page Number: 1) at the people who are Schedule 2 and 3 on the page who are both living at the same...

  5. Strike Breaker

My Grandfather was a Tea Broker by profession. I am told that during the General Strike of 1926 he volunteered to drive a tram. I have been unable to find out much about these 'volunteers'. Did they just approach the employers, or did they have to join a special organisation? Were any records...

  10. British Army WW1 Service Records 1914 - 1920

As some of you will have realised, I am currently trawling through just one section of the above records looking for an ancestor who is hiding from me. The title of this collection of records is VERY misleading. It contains Service Records from as early as the 1880's and as late as (so far)...
