Default Why did he receive his medals?

    Hello all,

Would someone happen to have any detail as to the reason George William Baldock b 3/12/1898 Tonbridge, Kent received his medals whilst serving in the Royal Navy. Do the RN have medal index cards?

Do you know which medals they were? Some were issued as 'standard', e.g. because you served in a particular battle, or for a certain number of years.
I couldn't remember precisely what the medals were called, only their nicknames of 'pip, squeak and wilfred' which lead me to (amongst a lot of others) these two sites
    https://www.
    greatwar.co.uk/medals/ww1-campaign-medals.htm
    https://www.iwm.org.uk/history/first...service-medals
The latter has a brief section about the issue of 'general' naval medals, as opposed to ones such as the Military Cross, etc.

I looked at an image of them today and would say at least two are from the trio, perhaps the 1914/15 Star and the Brittania medal given the ribbon colours, he has abbout 4 stars in total, and strangely what loooks like an MBE or similar with them.

I don't know where George at lived in various points in his life, but it's always a good idea to search the British Newspaper Archive (also available on Findmypast) for any reference to him. From experience it's best to search using only the surname because sometimes only an initial rather than a full name is given in
newspaper articles. I haven't found any references to medals so far but I have found an awful lot about my granddad, my dad and his siblings and even me. Not all years for all newspapers are currently available, but keep checking. My home town has recently had papers for the 1960s and 70s added.

If there’s still a medal that you haven’t identified, describe the ribbon. It might ring a bell with someone.
