Hi
In an email from my newly found '2nd cousin once removed', she mention that there was a Nye [the surname of our shared ancestors], who was a fireman in WW2, who was a dwarf and there is a newspaper article about him somewhere but she can’t find it, neither is she sure how if fits into our family but he was based in Croydon.
Would it be possible that a person with dwarfism would be in the fireservice and if so does anyone know how I would go about finding any further information.

Have you thought of contacting the London Fire Brigade? They have a page about WWII and the Blitz and a Contact Us page:

Hi
Thank you both:
Yes I had looked at these sites, but thought I would ask the question whether it was possible our relative could have been a fireman given his stature; I also tried searching by occupation, and newspaper articles for wartime, there were certainly some firemen called Nye, but sadly, at this moment, as I have no other information as to what sort of fireman he could have been, my searches were in vain.
To date, I also have only researched my direct line of Nye, maybe when I have looked at more relatives I will find him, but again thank you both for replying.

I can't see an obvious newspaper report, but there's a lot of them.
However, as it was wartime and many men were at conscripted, don't forget that other people who might not be sent to the Front were being recruited for other essential jobs.

Hi Lesley
Thank you for your reply. Yes, I also came across a lot of newspaper articles with mentions of a fireman Nye and various different initials but none that were very enlightening. I think it may depend on how short he may have been since I read that dwarfism is defined as 4ft 10in and under, so he could likely have been enlisted to any job. I will check back with my cousin to see how many Nye's she has researched to date and just keep looking.
I noted with interest that you are based in Netherlands, I have just found out that around 1596 my (I think) 10th generation Grandfather on my paternal side came from Netherlands, so I may be back one day with a new thread! Meanwhile thank you again for your time and input.
