Many thanks for the above - I am stunned and feel rather stupid. I couldn't find any of those using my old laptop until I entered the reference details that you provided. The lesson is simple - use my newer desktop computer in future.
In terms of the grandparents of William born 1865 (registered 1866) that will be pure speculation. Obviously I will look at all the Williams on the 1851 and 1841 census returns. The only connection I can think of using would be the occupation 'Shingler' if that was recorded. I will send for William (1866) birth certificate which hopefully will include a place of residence which may help in my search.
With reference to your earlier post "Did Elizabeth Edwards have a brother William born abt. 1842 in Staffordshire? If so Elizabeth and William Pyott/Pyatt possibly had a dau named Lois". Given the different ages of William on the census returns I am tending to think that Elizabeth was William's daughter - what do you think?
Regards David

Hi
I decided to try to find a bit more about Martha Brierley starting with the 1891 census on which she is recorded as Widow.
I found her marriage certificate in 1881 to James Brierly.
As she was a widow my search on the 1901 census used Martha born 1887 with her mother Martha in the "another person" field. I got a match RG13/3681 Page 28 on which Martha is recorded as Married and James is listed as the Head. There are additional children born between 1895 and 1901 but as yet I haven't found them on either FreeBMD or the GRO -but I have only just started looking. Nor can I find a 1911 census for Martha but again early days of searching.
My questions -
Why did Martha say she was married in 1891 - the image clearly shows "WID" so not a transcription error. Could it have been miscoding by the Enumerator perhaps?
Phonetic searches on Brierley haven't produced any results - any suggestions for alternatives?
I am relishing the challenges of this line in my family - rekindled my enthusiasm for family history.

I had spotted that and had assumed he was Martha's husband. But the 1901 census RG13/3681/18/28 listing both James and Martha completely confused me. After reading your posts about her second marriage why did she give the enumerator such incorrect details? One other question I wonder is the reason they travelled to Sheffield. The only reason I can think is that there was (is) a steel industry there.
Once again you have provided me with more snippets for my mum's ancestry fo which I am eternally grateful.
