Thank you so much for checking these sites. I've also tried them, they're so useful, aren't they? All the census say that Mary Ann was born in Wigan, and because of the help with the illegitimacy information, yesterday I found birth information on Lancashire BMD for Mary Ann Hill, mother's name Hill, in 1861 in Wigan. Also a baptism in Wigan, mother Ann Hill "a single woman". So I'm confident this is the correct family. I'm very grateful for all the input with regard to illegitimacy being the reason for a mother's name on a birth certificate. I've also been able to confirm John Knight's mother, Martha Knight, was single and found his brother - and more family information.

I agree that is your Ann. In the 1861 census there is an Ann and baby Mary in Petticoat Lane Ince (same address as baptism)in household of Charles Hill, Ann's father, although that Mary is age 1 not 0. I think Ann may have married a John Bromilow in 1861 and if I am correct, Mary can be found as Mary Bromilow in 1871. In 1881 Mary is not with the family which would fit with her being married.
