Default Determining Companies in a Regiment

    Hi everyone!

I have a rather frustrating issue in that I am trying to determine which company my 3GreatGrandfather was assigned to, and who was his Regimental Captain.

I spent a few weeks in the National Archives (TNA) at Kew in 2016 and found my 3GGF (#147 Mackey, Edward - 63rd Regiment of Foot, WO12/7256 onwards).

The Regiment was directed to Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) accompanying Convicts on a number of ships; and of course, the rank and file are listed just as that: "rank and file".

However, some of the newspapers reported the arrival of their Captains by name.

Is there any way to deduce Edward's Captain from the Muster Books? I am hoping that it is "Captain Baylee", but as there were 9 other Captains... well, you get the picture!

    Thanks!

Would it be the 'ship's captain' and not the regiment's captain who was named??
