Default Albert Bailey - Born Crewe 1909

I am looking for the father of my father Albert Morris. His name was legally Albert Bailey although he went to school, got a job, went to war, got married and had me in 1947, not legally changing name to Albert Morris until 1954!
Below is everything I can think of. It is long but please try and stay awake, you may be able to help??

My Father Albert Bailey was born to a Florence Bailey on 22 September 1909 at 59 Samuel Street Monks Coppenhall Crewe, registered in Nantwich Registration District, Sub District Crewe in the county of Chester on 6 October 1909 by Florence, stating Mother and 59 Samuel Street as informant and residence. She is not there in 1911 census. In 1911 census 59 Samuel Street has James and Elizabeth Banks with daughter Ellen Olive 20 years old. Florence was 23/24 at this point. I have voting register information noting James Banks at 59 Samuel Street in 1909 along with a William Stanier. Could Elizabeth have been a midwife? Were Florence and Ellen friends? (Samuel and West Street were only yards apart, West Street is still there but now a major road without any houses).

My Father was brought up by James Gray Morris b 21 February 1871 in Swansea South Wales and Eliza Miriam Morris (nee Hayward) b 25 November 1876 in 11 Chapel Place Chelsea London. Both appear in the 1911 census at 18 Princess Street London (married 6 years). All birth and marriage dates are in line with certificates. James is described as a Journeyman Printer under occupation. James died in 1922 and Eliza in 1972, living in 18 Princess Street for most of the time where I visited her regularly until she was moved out by the council a few years before her death.

Dad was baptised in St. Judes Church, Southwark in London on November 8 1909, his address is given as 18 Princess Street but he does not appear here on the 1911 census. Note he was 7 weeks old, how did he get to London? Pretty well every Bailey, plus Edmund Morris (see below), was involved in some way or another with the railways!

Dad does appear in the 1921 census at the correct age and is noted as “adopted”!

I believe the birth family of Florence was as follows:

George H Bailey b 1859 Salop Old Park Cheshire, at home in 457 West St in 1901 census, occupation Stationary Engine Driver

Annie Bailey (nee Hedworth) his wife b 1862 Cumberland Carlisle, at home in 457 West St in 1891 census. In the 1901 census Annie was not recorded but in 1911 census George has a 2nd wife recorded as Margaret (married 9 years).

George married Annie in 1881. Annie may have had an illegitimate daughter Gertrude before marrying George, Gertrude does not appear in the 1891/1901/1911 census as Bailey.
Gertrude married Edmund Morris (no relation I can find) in 1907 in Cheshire and they had two children:
    1. Nellie b 1909
    2. Edmund b 1911.

Nellie was born same year as my Dad and Edmund two years later. As they were cousins, did they ever meet? At that age they would not actually have remembered and are probably both deceased by now, but there may be a family story. Are there any children of Nellie or Edmund around, as if there are we may be roughly the same age and half cousins?

William H, a son b 1882 Crewe Cheshire, at home in 457 West St in 1901 census, occupation Engine Fitter.

Samuel H, a son b 1885 Crewe Cheshire at home in 457 West St in 1901 census, occupation Tinsmith.

Florence Adelaide, a daughter b 1886 Crewe Cheshire (my Grandmother??), at home in 457 West St in 1901 census, Florence married a Thomas Street in 1920 and died in around 1961 in Stockport.

From the 1920 marriage of Florence Bailey & Thomas Street there were three children:
    1. Irene, 11 June 1920
    2. Florence, Stockport Cheshire Jun1/4 8a-169
    3. Marjorie, 15 April 1924

From Florence/Thomas and Gertrude/Edmund the five children noted would all be roughly the same generation as my Dad.

Irene married a Frank Morrissy in 1944 and had two children. Both of these would be my half cousins. One married in 1973 and lives in Brisbane, Australia, but refuses a DNA test to check!

Annie M, a daughter b 1889 Crewe Cheshire, at home in 457 West St in 1901 census.

Sarah Jane, a daughter b 1891 Crewe Cheshire, at home in 457 West St in 1901 census and a domestic servant with J Keen McMyn and Mirtle May McMyn (married 2 years) at “Fordham” Bramhall Cheshire in 1911 census. J Keen is described as Fire Engineer under occupation. I am advised Sarah, possibly, died in Stockport in 1958 having married Harry Street in 1914, being a brother to Annie and Thomas Street.

Frances E, a daughter b 1893 Crewe Cheshire, at home in 457 West St in 1901 census and a domestic servant with Alfred McMichael and Cecile Marion McMichael (married 13 years) with children Marguerite, Frederick and Cecile at “Thornhill” Bramhall Cheshire in 1911 census. Alfred is described as Printer and Stationer under occupation. See reference to James Gray Morris, also a printer.

George W, a son born 1894 Crewe Cheshire, at home in 457 West St in 1901 census. Married an Annie Street in 1920, Annie being a sister of Thomas and Harry Street. You will remember from earlier that Florence married Thomas!

A friend has done a lateral check for me and come up with a Frederick Tilley as a possible Grandfather. This seems to tie up rather well with a descendant of his, one Jon Dunkley, who appears as a DNA 1st/2nd cousin to me on Ancestry. Jon Dunkley has no tree on Ancestry and I cannot find him!

    ANY HELP MUCH APPRECIATED

    Welcome to the Brit-Gen forums.

I have a very busy day today so can't give this much attention but I am sure others will be along to sort something out, meanwhile on ancestry's search page I just entered Jon Dunkley, no other details. I got two results, one born in the late 1700's and the other in 1914 died 1994. The owner of the tree for the latter is Paul Maurice but he hasn't been online for 12 months. There are only four poeple on the tree and two others are private. One of the others is David Maurice 1955 - 1999 who is recorded as married to a child (private) of Jon Dunkley.
No birth place recorded for Jon Dunkley but David Maurice born Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada, died 1999 Hinckley, Pine, Minnesota,

Enumerated as BAYBY on 1921 census. How sure are you that this is your Albert Bailey because there are two registered in Nantwich 1909?

In the 1921 census my Dad Albert Bailey was living at 18 Princess Street in SE London. His adoptive Dad died in 1922 but I knew his adoptive Mother until she died in 1972 but she never spoke about this.

An additional item about another "relative". My Mum was a Gridley from the Old Kent Road. Some several months ago a Marina Smith posted a photo on Facebook of a Robert Gridley and his wife outside 85 Dorset Road South Lambeth London, reckoned in 1911. They are not there according to the 1911 census. Anybody know who they might be? Do not appear to be of "MY" Gridley Line!
