    Default Vanguard??

Looking at the 1911 census I have my ancestor working as a 'vanguard' for the Gas Light & Coke Company. Does anyone know what this means please? Google only gives me military references!

    Thank you.

It might be literally what it says. A van guard.
FMP have 1795 people with vanguard as their occupation in 1911. Most seem to be boys, aged 14 and upwards. Mostly teenagers, but some aged 20 or more.
The occupation code is 525, and according to FMP that's 'Motor Van etc Guards, Boys'.
Have a look between 521 and 537 for other occupations connected with transport. https://www.

Note 'motor van' as opposed to railway guard.

Thank you. I'll dig a bit deeper as you suggest.
