A friend of ours has the surname Shill, which is quite unusual. Her father was a Dennis Gordon Shill, born in Gloucestershire, around the 1930's. Would appreciate any more info. re-censuses of any Shills before that time, or any other info. connected with that surname. He married a Sylvia Elsie Williams, from Pontypridd, not sure of the year. Thankyou.

Going back to Grandfather: Headley died on 14 November 1965. His birth was registered in 1899 as Headley Granvill in Wheatenhurst.

In 1939 Hedley and his wife (who married again after Headley's death) were living at 91 Pontypridd Rd, Barry. He was a Coal Tipper with GWR.

The 1901 census shows: Middle Street, Eastington, Gloucs.

George married Harriet Selina Davis in 1890. Harriet died in 1906 (register Mar. Qtr)
George remarried Edith May Sims in Dec quarter 1906 - Cheltenham.

I think I have this wrong, Headley (or Hedley sometimes) was Dennis's father, George was the grandfather.

Where have you already looked? It's much better if they know that they are not repeating things.
For example, there is a marriage between Dennis G Shill and Sylvia E Williams registered on FreeBMDfor in Stroud in 1956. The marriage certificate would supply the names of the fathers, etc. Of course, since they are likely to be alive, our members can't provide more details on the forum.

Regarding the census, when you know the parental names, the 1921 is available. There's also the 1939 Register. Both available on Find My Past.

I think I found George in the army in 1900. He was in the army originally for 12 years which is probably why I cannot find him on a previous census. He then tried to re-join the Army Reservists (for WW1)but was discharged "not being able to become an efficient soldier" due to having a deformed left arm. Also on the 1939 register living at 51 Winstonian Rd, Cheltenham with Edith, Raymond and Dorothy.

Duke was actually registered as Ambrose Duke,
Ruby was Ruby Grace
Raymond Stanley

You might think that Shill is an unusual name, then you search and come up with loads!
