I think I will have to accept that Sarah was born illegitimate and that Margaret was her mother. Although I can find no other references to Mary Ann Fowler (Fowles etc), Cathan Allen or Ann Mitchell, all recorded as Grand daughter's in various census returns.

From the free searches on SP-
Isabella Adamson married George Allan in 1850.
Mary Adamson married Charles Fowlie in 1861.

Usually if I've been to SP I don't bother checking with Ancestry. However, they link Sarah Anderson to a Sarah Glover Prince and a child called Sarah Paterson Prince - no dates of course...
Chasing the other links that they suggest is confusing.

A Sarah Glover Prince married a Thomas Hislop Paterson 1891 Blythswood reg dist.(Glasgow) She died in 1940 age 75 in Haymarket reg dist(Edinburgh)
