    Default Jane Connolly and family

Jane Connolly was born in 1871 in Felling, County Durham. Her parents Colin and Ann Connolly also had Patrick (1863-?), Mary (1865-1946), James (1876-?) and three deceased sons (two Johns and a Thomas).

Jane married Francis Dixon in 1905. Did they remain in Felling? Also, who were Francis’s parents and did Jane and Francis have children?

We believe Francis may have been born in 1863 in Gateshead and that he died in 1924 in Gateshead. But not sure about this.

An elderly family member has told us that Jane have re-married, to Michael O’Shea in 1928 in Gateshead. But where did they live and did they have children?

We’re also looking for information on Jane’s brother James Connolly, born 1876 in Felling, County Durham. Did he marry and have children and when and where did he die? The 1901 census has a James Connolly, age 25, who was a colliery labourer, which may be him.

Any help with these queries would be much appreciated.

I looked at the index of the 1921 census and see there is a Jane and Francis Dixon living in the parish of Heworth, Durham. The only other person on this return is Charles. If you pay £2.50 you can look at the full entry. £3.50 will give you the actual written sheet. I cannot find anything on the 1911 census,

Family search have in Heworth in 1911, Mrs F Dixon b 1872,Frank Dixon,1867 bar manager, son Matthew 1893, brother in law James Connolly 1876. Does this seem possible?
You would really need to check the 1905 marriage record to see Francis's father's name and if Francis had been married before.

Bar manager Frank can be found with wife Mary in 1901 - so Mrs F Dixon on 1911 could be Mary or possibly Jane if Mary had died before 1905.

Based on the area in which the births were registered, only two probables showing on

which gives mother's maiden name on entries before 1912.
Lizzie Ann Dixon birth registered March quarter 1905 and Geoffrey Dixon December quarter 1907, both Sunderland registration district. Mother's name Connolly. In 1911 census they seem to be with parents John and Margaret Dixon, living in Sunderland.

Simple maths would have told you the answer - highly unlikely because in 1928 Jane would have been 57.

Jane Dixon married Michael O'Shea in Qtr 3 1928 in Gateshead Vol 10A Page 1805.

Widows or divorcees marriages are nearly always listed under their previous married name.

A widowed Jane O'Shea born on 7 May 1872 was living at 8 Perkins Memoral Cottages, Chester-Le-Street, County Durham in the 1939 Register.

A Michael O'Shea born in 1870 died in 1936 in Chester-Le-Street, County Durham.

A 71 year old Jane O'Shea died in 1944 in Durham Central Registration district.

The only entry I could find for a birth for Matthew in 1893 was in Haltwhistle. Mother's maiden name - Thompson. There is a marriage entre for Mary Thompson to Robert Dixon in Haltwhistle in 1891.

Just to add to the above, the 1901 census mentioned by grisel at post #4 has them living at the Bay Horse Inn, Felling, where Francis/Frank is the Inn Keeper aged 34, and Mary is 30 - both born Heworth. Their children are Robert 11, Matthew B 9, Margaret 4, and Francis 2m ( think this should be Frances, and that she died later the same year).

In 1911 Robert 21 and Margaret 13 appear to be with their widowed grandmother, Frances.

There is a death in Gateshead district in 1904 of a Mary Dixon aged 34, which is probably Francis/Frank's first wife.
