    Default GRO

Hi All...Am I missing something or have the GRO stopped putting mothers surnames on when you do a birth search?

Quick reply as I have to go out shortly - the answer is yes and no.

Yes, with some births the results don't show a mother's maiden name if you've left the mmn search box blank. No, if you do know the mmn and put it in the search box, then it will show in the results.

It's probably to do with privacy, identity theft etc; I've a feeling it applies to all births from about the 1920s, and I might even once have seen a definite date for it, but I'm afraid I can't look for it now.

GRO stopped putting MMN around mid 1920s although both genealogy sites I use have MMN on birth registrations around the same dates.

Pat - I presume you're referring to the GRO's indexes on its own web site.
    https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/c...ates/login.asp

I confess that I mainly use FreeBMD when looking for BMD registrations, then use the GRO site when looking for the details missing from the early records such as the age at death (till 1866) and mother's maiden name (till 1911).

As some of my rellies were born 1920-1930, I've done some checking.
From what I can see, mother's maiden names are included up to and including 1922.
1923 onwards it will only show the mother's maiden name if you enter it in the relevant box.
