I can't find an entry on the 1939 register for an Arthur living with a Mary. I also can't find a marriage between a Prosser and Aldwinkle. But I keep looking. Why do you think his name could have been Prosser or Roberts? Any ideas what his occupation was and did he marry? Also on the 1939 entry you have, was it in London?

Do you have any more info on Arthur? Parents names etc?

Do you know who Mary Prosser nee Aldwinkle is? There is a birth registered in Stepney in 1904 for a Mary Aldwinkle but that's all I found.

The 1939 register has Arthur Roberts carman 26/3/01 annotated in red ink, I cannot read the annotation.
Mary Roberts, 2/5/04, annotated 25/6/49 to Prosser NR230.

    1939

Arthur Roberts & Mary Roberts/Prosser are in Chicksand street,Stepney.

Mary Aldwinkle married James Prosser in 1929,She’s then with Arthur calling herself Roberts in 1939.

I’ve been researching this family with OP on another forum,we are completely stuck on Arthur Roberts c1901.

I suggested she posted on here and hopefully the super sleuths will work their magic.

Also we found Mary post 1939 but not Arthur as yet.

I thinkNR230 refers to a name change by deed poll, but I'm uncertain.

Do you think it is possible that Mary Roberts on the 1939 register COULD be Arthur's sister or relative, not his wife? The NR230 dated 25.6.49 and the name of Roberts crossed out and Prosser looks like they were written at the same time to me. Just a thought that Mary changed her name or married on the 25th June 1949. But I can't find a registration. I also wonder if the red ink on the entry is just a smudge!

I see the registration of the marriage between Mary and James that Mary is recorded as Allwinkle. Do you have the marriage certificate?

Have you found the registration of Arthur's birth on Free BMD? If so we may be able to find his mother's maiden name, then perhaps find them on the 1911 census.

Mary Aldwinkle (or Aldwinckle) did not marry until 1929 but I cannot see her on the 1921 census.

Have you got Mary's death certificate, and if so how does it describe her? e.g. wife of or widow of, followed by the name. Also who registered the death and how are they described? e.g. Fred Bloggs, husband or Archie Bloggs, brother.

If you haven't got the death certificate, then you need it. Order from

I agree. The death certificate is important.

There is the registration for Mary Aldwinkle born Stepney 1904. The mother's maiden name was Feeney so as I cannot see a marriage registration for a Feeney and Aldwinkle, that is perhaps where the Irish link comes from and that is where the marriage took place. Only a guess and not adding anything to the original post.
