Default "Do you recognise" on the A*** DNA site

I haven't looked at my DNA matches for a while, but I see that they now have a "Do you recognise this person" box. I tentatively clicked "yes"on a first cousin and it asked me whether she was on my father's or mother's side. I backed out then.
What does this do? Will it go on to ask me which grandparent and so on? And what does it do with the info? Does it improve the accuracy of "common ancestors" and ThruLines?

All it does is add the word 'Maternal' or 'Paternal' to your match, plus the relationship - in this case first cousin.

By identifying if they are on your maternal or paternal line, you can in theory make the same assumption about many of your shared matches.

In short, it doesn't do anything more than what you probably do mentally anyway.

If you do a DNA test Ancestry now splits between parent 1 and parent 2. Their latest update gives each chromosome an ethnicity. Further update promised shortly! So it may well be useful if you have done a DNA test. I think it is useful. cicilysmith

Thanks Cicily. Might be worth doing after all.
