Hi There,
Wondering if anyone can help with this:
William Neale according to his Royal Navy Record was born Dec 1891 in Derby Derbyshire.
Service Number K35493, but difficult to make out day of birth though.
His age on joining is also difficult to read but could be 16 years old.
But that doesn't make sense as his joining date is 5th August 1916.
1891+16 takes it to 1907?
Can someone please help with census details for this chap and perhaps any thing else which might build up a picture of his life.
If it also helps, it appears he served until 1928

William Neale
Birth Date - 24 Dec 1891
Birth Place - Derby, Derbyshire
First Service Date - 5 Aug 1916
First Ship Served On - Victory II
Last Service Date - 4 May 1928
Last Ship Served On - Victory 2
Service Number - K35493
I can't see a birth registration on FreeBMD for a William Neale Dec 1/4 1891 or March 1/4 1892
but there is one in the March 1/4 1891 in Derby so I wonder if his year of birth is wrong in the records. On the GRO index this William Neales mother's maiden name is Brown.
Maybe not as there is a William Neale born 31 Jan 1891 on the 1931 register.

There’s also a further Naval entry where he served until mid 1930s and was invalided out,Pulmonary Tuberculosis.
There’s a typo on this record With the date 1830!

The 1891 census has one William Neal (no Neale) b 1891 Pilsey, Derbyshire, Parents Ruben (blacksmith) & Susannah. Might be worth looking at.
Could his age at joining be 26 rather than 16? Does his record show a pre-joining occupaxtion?

Additional records on the National Archives show he served until 1934, when he was invalided out with pulmonary TB.
There's also a medal card on there for what I assume is the same man, but gives a YoB of 1890.
If the birth suggested at post #2 is right (mmn Brown), then there was also a daughter, Kathleen, born in 1893.
I think this is them in 1901 at the New Inn, Nottingham - RG13, Piece 3173, Folio 154, Page 10
Caroline Fern 40 widow b Notts, Wootton Bassett (which doesn't make sense!)
William Neale 10 son b Derby, Derbyshire
Catherine Neale 8 daur b Derby, Derbyshire
By 1911 Kathleen is an inmate at St James Diocesan Home For Penitents, 484 Fulham Palace Road, Fulham
It may be relevant that William's occupation is already shown as Seaman when he joined the Royal Navy, so this could be why he can't be found in 1911?

Hi All,
Thank you so much for the help and thoughts with this enquiry.
It is very much appreciated.
Would be interested to know where I can get the other naval related research which has been talked about and the Medal Card. What Service Number do those appear under please?
I found another bit of paper which has a number RG13/ 3173 which come with the K35493 Naval Service Record. So that was from 1901 and has mentioned does show William Neale as 10 years old and Catherine Neale as 8 years old both born Derby and shown as taken in Nottinghamshire.
"By 1911 Kathleen is an inmate at St James Diocesan Home For Penitents, 484 Fulham Palace Road, Fulham". Sounds sad but would like to know where I can find that information?
That means that the born 1891, 1901+10 would bring him up to 16years old in or around 1916.
Christina, you have also mentioned March 1/4 1890 Registration district St Geo, H, Sq. where do I find this?
Was a real surprise to see are only in the Wairarapa, all the best from the Hutt

When William Neale was invalided out of the Navy in 1934 the record states ‘Invalided P,U,N,S.’
There’s also a stamp which looks like ‘Invalided,Haslar’ 5/6/34.
Any idea what P.U.N.S.stands for? Portsmouth ??? maybe?
Any thoughts on the chap on 1939 register #post3

NEALE I am using ancestry.com for this search. If you don't have it your local library may have the free library version or you could take out a free trial but it is essential you remember to cancel it a couple of days before it finishes or they will charge you a hefty price for a 12 month subscription!!
I have had a long day here in the Wairarapa so will leave this until tomorrow.
