    Post Looking for Hamiltons, McCleans in Dromore

    I have several Hamilton relatives from Dromore, County Down, Northern Ireland. (I am in the USA.) I am looking for early Hamiltons in Dromore several generations back, early 1800s. I am also wondering if relatives still live there. Please see details below:

    Margaret B. Hamilton, born Sep. 5, 1877 in Ballmacormick, Dromore, Down [I have her birth cert.]
    Emigrated in 1885 to work in linen mills in Lawrence, Mass.
    Married Charles Richards Vose in 1896 in Lawrence.
    Died in Lawrence, Mass. USA, on Aug 16, 1953.

    She was the daughter of

    Joseph Hamilton, b. Mar 10, 1838, Dromore, died 1910 in Lawrence, Mass., USA;

    and Isabella McClean/McLane/McLean/McClain, b. Oct 10, 1838, Dromore, died 1905 in Lawrence, Mass., USA.

    They were married March 19, 1859 at Dromore Cathedral.

    Joseph Hamilton arrived in Boston in 1887 to work in the linen mills in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Isabella arrived in 1888.

    Joseph Hamilton was son of William Hamilton, b. 1810 and Mary Gibson, b. 1814. He had a sister Jane, b. 1836. No other details known.

    Isabella ("Bella") was daughter of Alexander McClean/McLane/McLean/McClain (dates unk) and Mary Carlisle/Carlile.
    Isabella McClean had siblings
    Mary Anne (b 1836, rest unknown);
    Alexander (1841-abt 1899) stayed in Ireland, married Mary Ann ?); and
    James (b. 1848, rest unknown)

    Death of Alexander McClean in 1881 aged about 60:

    Mary McClean died in 1890 aged 79:

    This looks to be Alexander jr in the 1901 census (so still alive then):

    Alexander and Ann Wilkinson married in 1868:

    Family in 1911:

    Note they only had the one child who was evidently Isaac. Isaac died of a boil on his neck (according to the Dromore Weekly Times of 10.2.1912). Died in his mother’s arms.

    Alexander died in 1917:

    Informant was his nephew from Magherabeg. Ann died in 1916:

    Probate abstract (the full will is in PRONI):

    Probate of the Will of Annie McClean late of Ballymacormick County Down Married Woman who died 2 October 1916 granted at Belfast to Joseph Gibson and George Thompson Farmers.

    Doesn’t seem that line of the family had any immediate descendants.

    This is all helpful information!

    This Alexander (first in your list) would put his birth about 1821 -- Isabella's sister Mary Ann was born in 1836, so he would have been about 15. I have to dive in some more. Thanks for digging in and providing links!

    The death record for Alexander is particularly good because Joseph Hamilton "son-in-law" is the reporter of the death.
