    Default FRANCES EVE BENJAMIN 1860-1910

This new thread is a response to a researcher who contacted me regarding Frances Eve Benjamin 1860-1910. Frances was the daughter of Abraham Benjamin and Rebecca Simmonds. I have previously posted on the Simmonds, Benjamin and associated lines in earlier threads.

I was unaware of details regarding Frances but have seen various Ancestry public family trees which contain details on her including marriage and daughter. However, I was unaware of the mental issues which severely impacted her life including admission to Bethlem and another mental institute.

Importantly, the online site Bethlem Museum of the Mind has a wide range of patient records for the period and these include Frances. There is a photograph of Frances age 28 admitted to the hospital in 1888 with her patient notes. These medial notes and treatment reveal the medical understanding at the time for patients requiring support.

The notes also refer to insanity within Frances relatives including an aunt and paternal uncle.
In this thread I will post data on Frances including her parents, siblings, relatives and later marriage and a daughter.
Frances was to be committed to another institute where she died in 1910. Her only child a daughter was 10 when her mother died.

This thread is intended for my Jacobs,Simmonds, Benjamin distant cousins some of whom are unaware about Frances and her life.

    Further posts to follow.

The data suggests that Frances Eve was newly born when her father died. The Bethlem Record in 1888 for Frances indicated 'Domestic Conflict' as one cause of her mental health issues but there is no indication for the basis of this statement.

In #1 of this thread reference was made to the Bethlem Asylum records for Frances Eve aka Eva Benjamin in 1888. These records referred to a paternal uncle who was also placed in Haywards Heath Asylum. See thread Abraham Benjamin-Rebecca Simmonds started 26.1.2017 and #4 of the thread. In #4 I provided data on Henry Benjamin who was Frances paternal uncle. He died in Haywards Heath Asylum in 1879 - see his probate and other records.

The Constance Road Workhouse,Camberwell Admission Record shows that Francis Eva GARRETT was admitted as Destitute on Monday November 20,1908 classified as Temporary Disabled and later transferred to Long Grove Asylum Epsom. Her dob is recorded as 1859. There are only 16 surviving case files for Long Grove but there are medical registers 1907-1948 and other records.

There is insufficient data to indicate why Francis was recorded as destitute unless she had left her home and was found 'wandering'. What the cause of her condition is not known but she did not live long at Long Grove until her death in 1910 at the age of 50. A Death certificate may provide further data.
