    Default Missing Marriage

    Hi all...In 1898 I have the marriage at Prescot Lancs of William Pendlebury Age 48/Widower/ Occ: Flatman/ Father: James Pendlebury, Flatman. and Margaret Jane Davies Age 36/Spinster/ Father: Joseph, Coal Miner.
    William and Margaret had three children Mary Margaret b1886, William b1889 and Elizabeth Alice b1891 all born before they married obviously.
    I can't find a previous marriage for William. Does anyone have any ideas?
    In 1851 and 61 census William is living with parents in Runcorn Cheshire, his father was also a Waterman. Can't find him in 1871 &1881 census.

    Have you found William & kids in the 1901 census? I found one 2 year old called William, but the siblings were wrong - that wife was called Lucy..
    It was quite common for a widowed man with young kids to remarry fairly quickly for obvious reasons. Bride 2 was often either a relative or a widow...
    What about the birth certificates for the kids? Do they name Margaret?

    Hi Pat,

    A William Pendlebury age 20, was married Aug 22nd 1870 at Church of St Mary, Widnes. William was a waterman, and his father James also a waterman. Bride was Elizabeth Harrop,18, father Joseph a porter.

    In 1881 there's an Elizabeth Pendlebury age 30, married, born Grappenhall, Cheshire, no husband at the address. RG11; Piece: 3724; Folio: 69; Page: 57;

    In 1871 there's an Elizabeth Pendlebury, married, a waterman's wife at home with her parents, however, her father is Robert, and she's born Runcorn. Piece: 3692; Folio: 40; Page number: 28

    ETA: In 1881 (above) there's a John Owen living in Elizabeth's household.

    The Warrington Evening Post 10 July 1879 mentions an Elizabeth Pendlebury, a married woman, assaulted by John Owen with whom she was cohabiting.

    There's a tree on Ancestry which has those two boys, and they have their father as William Pendlebury son of James Pendlebury and Mary Ann Nichols. They also have Robert born 15 Jul 1873 • 10 Vine Street, Runcorn, that's the same address Elizabeth and her parents were at in 1871.
