Default desperately needing help with crew list

HMS Challenger set sail from Portsmouth on the 21st Dec 1872 with 270 souls aboard and under the Captaincy of George Strong Nares RN. It was the first sea voyage organised specifically to gather data of Ocean features. Is there anyway that the crew list for this voyage can be tracked down. This was a journey that took over 4 and a half years

    Have you tried https://www.crewlist.org.uk/about/fi...ingoncrewlists

Other reading which might lead to the crew list (in some cases you need to scroll to the bottom of the page for further links/books, etc.)

I presume that you've done an internet search using terms such as 'HMS Challenger crew' or similar?

I don't think that's HMS Challenger, but another ship of the same name.

Yes I've checked out those searches. His name was John Sharplin the rope maker. He must have been a busy guy as over 400km of rope was used during the challengers journey

    What is your actual query?
In your first post you're asking about crew lists. Now you're talking about someone who presumably was a crew member. It's confusing to say the least.

Do you mean the John Sharplin b 1842 in Bermondsey? There doesn't appear to be any crew lists for the HMS Challenger expedition online. I assume you have the census info for him which is online.

the wikipedia article on the Challenger expedition gives a link to something called The Challenger Medal Roll (1895) which lists some people including Nares (but not Sharplin)

must admit it hadn't occured to me that ropemakers would join voyages - I thought it would be a shore-based occupation

His naval record is available for free online at the NA. He joined up in 1861. Lists the ships he was on but alas HMS Challenger is not one of them.t
