Have you checked the Northern Ireland equivalent of the civil registration index?
https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/services/go-groni-online
Ditto the equivalent on ScotlandsPeople, and the GRO Index for England and Wales.

If he's not registered in any of those three, nor in the Eire registration records either, then you have to consider either that the name has been misspelt/misranscribed in the index, or that the date of death is wrong. Where did you get it from? Family members' memories have been known to be faulty.
I know that a lot of the Irish newspapers are available through the British Newspaper Archive, though I don't know what years are covered. Worth a search.Vulcan XH558 - “Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.”

Belfast newspapers give that as the correct date
update - his death registration is on the NI direct site, without middle name
Registration Number D/1950/57/1007/86/39
Edward McAlonan 9 May 1950

Have you checked spelling variations? Some search engines treat Mc/Mac names as the same, sometimes you have to search them individually. They were frequently interchangeable as far as clerks were concerned.

in case you didn't know (but I expect you do), Edward Ross McAlonan's wife Annie Elizabeth died 10 June 1973 at her home 24 Runkerry Road, Giant's Causeway and is buried at Roselawn cemetery, Belfast. I got that information from a newspaper but I note Ancestry has the same information.
Can't seem to access NI Direct website at the moment.
Belfast City Council has burial records
