    Default UPTON, John b1842/1855 Stoke on Trent - WW1

    Mis-filed with MARTIN in the WW1 Service Records (WO 363):

    John UPTON, widower, joined the West Yorkshire Regiment on 24 November 1915, declaring age 60y with 24 years' service in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers.
    Discharge sheet shows year of birth 1842.

    Home address: 3 Cartledge Street, Stoke on Trent - also the address of his next-of-kin - his niece Mrs STURGE.

    Allotted regt no. 23719
    Discharged 18 May 1916 - the standard phrase "not likely to become an efficient soldier" followed by "old age".

    His attestation for his original service is among the pension records on Anc. He was born in the county of Denbigh, was living in Carnarvonshire and was 32. A single labourer, no kids. Swore the oath to Queen Victoria. Seems to have spent most of his life re-engaging in the army.
