Default MORRIS or MARTIN, Fk Adolphus c1889-1915

In the WW1 Service Records (WO 363):

This man joined up, married and died as MARTIN ... but there is no birth recorded.
Could he be MORRIS, Frederick Adolphus (Q3 1889 St Olave)? GRO shows no mother's maiden name.

Frederick MARTIN joined the Rifle Brigade on 7 August 1914, declaring age 25y 42d, born Rotherhithe.
Died of wounds 21 October 1915.

Married Esther Eliza FAREY at Canning Town, 21 January 1912 (as MARTIN, Frederick A R)
Daughter ESTHER ELLEN born 3 October 1912.
A daughter ELIZABETH was born late 1914/early 1915 - death registered Q1 1915. The claim for payment (for the certificate) names him as Frederick Adolphus.

In 1919 widow Esther named his parents as Henry and Ellen/Helen MARTIN of 6 Quadrant Street, Bow. (She had moved to 17 Rippoth Road, Old Ford, Bow).

    Confirmation/correction would be appreciated!

According to the CoE marriage register on Anc (co.uk) he had a 3rd forename - Rudolphus.
It does not help with searches!

There are some pension records for him on Fold3, and one states that a claimant was his mother, Mrs H Martin, 6 Quadrant Street, Canning Town.

In 1921 at that address is what has been transcribed as Helen Moner Martin born c1849 Rotherhtihe. The 1921 transcriptions are known to be bad, so it may be worth buying a copy and deciding for yourself what that middle name is.

In 1861 at 2 Bedford Place, Rotherhithe is Helen MORRIS aged 13, niece to William & Helen Grace.

I have a possibility, but not confirmed.

There is a marriage at Shoreditch 22 Jul 1867

William MANKTELOW 30 Bachelor, Engraver of 6 Earl Street. Father: William, Licenced Victualler
Helen MORRIS 18 Spinster of 5 Clifton Street, Father: Thomas (deceased) a Lighterman
Wits: Henry Manktelow & Mary Payne

In 1881 the family is at Ewart Road, Lewisham. Helen is Helen M Manktelow aged 32 born Rotherhithe, and William is aged 44, and Engraver born Bermondsey - RG11/739/64/10

In 1883 a Wm Manktelow, Engraver aged 46 arrives in Melbourne aboard the Lusitania

By 1891 the various children from the 1881 census appear to be in children's homes etc (I havent looked at them very closely so there may well be more information in poor law records etc).

In 1906 in West Ham there is a marriage between Helen Maria MANKTELOW and (same page) Henry MARTIN.

Just re-checked Frederick's pension card as I remembered Id spotted something else..

The pension card has a note dated 15 Sep 1933 saying Helen was dead, and there is this death in 1933 along with a probate record under Helen Maria MARTEN giving her address as 34 Edwin Street, Canning Town (probate to George Henry Stickland, Estate Agent)

MARTIN, HELEN MARIA aged 84 GRO Reference: 1933 S Quarter in WEST HAM Volume 04A Page 75

I suspect that this is 'Helen Moner Martin' from the 1921 census, living at 6 Quadrant Street, Canning Town.

Just read his service papers for the first time - it looks like where the father's details are given a word has been crossed out - possibly 'step'?

The papers also name a half-sister as Rosie Annie MANKTELOW, so we're definitely looking at the right woman. Ealier births also give a link to St Olave

Thank you Jomot1. I think you've confirmed my suspicions!
