I'm puzzling over marriage for my gt.gt.gt.grandparents Lees Platt & Marjorie Mellor.
I have found two possible marriage records
1/ 6 Aug 1821 at St Chad's Rochdale
2/ 1 Oct 1820 at StMary's Prestwich
Lees b 1799 d 1875
Marjorie b 1802 d 1842
Both from Saddleworth area.
I suppose it's not beyond the realms of possibility there were two couples with the same names, from the same area got married so close together, but it does seem a bit of a stretch.
But if they are the same people, how can they be married twice ?
By the way, St Cad Richdale was the mother church of St Chad, Uppermill, Saddleworth and St Mary's Prestwich was the mother church of St Mary's Oldham, of which Saddlewirth is part.
Anyine have any ideas to help.
Thanks

I did wonder about banns. My problem was different cnurches in different parishes.
But I'm happy to go with that.
Thank you

FMP has an image of the banns that reads
"1820, Oct 1st, Lees Platt & Mary Mellor of Old'm, 1, 2, 3"
The preceding entry reads
"1820, Oct 1st, Sam'l Chadwick & Mary Mellor, 1, 2, 3" but the "Mary" has been crossed through and "Miriam" written in above.
Coincidence?"dyfal donc a dyr y garreg"

If one of the couple was registered in a different parish to the other (and presumably the wedding location) the banns had to be read in their home parish.

Thank you. There is an image of both on Ancestry, but I didn't see that it stated banns. That must be the solution, I think.

Thanks so much. That must be the explanation. One must have been registered at Uppermill and the other at Oldham, which were both built as chapels of ease. I assume they got married at the mother church, which is about 11 miles away, to avoid paying double fees.
Thank you for your help
