    Question Amendments on 1939 Register

    Hi,

Wonder if anyone is able to shed some light on the 'code' used by those who amended the 1939 register.

I am currently researching HILDA PRATT (CRONSHAW), however have hit a hurdle as she used her married name as the maiden name on both her children's birth certificates.

It looks like she either re-married or divorced in the period where the register was still maintained.

Does anyone know what 'Inst 286 Ab' means?

    Thanks in advance,
    Piers

To add, here is the marriage registration:

It looks like PRATT, HILDA did indeed marry another PRATT. I might be overthinking this, but it would be unusual to have assumed your husband's name prior to marriage, right?

In which case, it would be a likely inference that she later remarried or adopted the new surname CRONSHAW (per the 1939 entry)?

    Marriages Sept 1/4 1935
Arthur B Pratt to Hilda Pratt registration district Manchester S. vol 8d page 204
Isn't that her husband and two children she is with on the 1939 register?
Arthur B Pratt born March 1918 died March 1/4 1969 so did Hilda marry a Cronshaw between then and around 1981 when the 1939 register entries were discontinued.

I can't see a marriage for Hilda Pratt to a Cronshaw but there is a death for a Hilda Cronshaw born 19 January 1917 (matches the 1939 register) Manchester reg district June 1/4 1970 vol 10c page 529

Thank you Christina - that's extremely helpful, thanks for the clarification re the 1939 register.

Let me go and ask a few questions of the family and see if this all lines up. Appreciate you looking at this!

I did a free search of the 1921 census index.
There was a Hilda Pratt born 1917 living in Chorlton,Manchester.

Like Christina I can't see a marriage between a Hilda Pratt and a Cronshaw, but all that means is that it doesn't appear in the records that are readily available online. They could have married outside of England and Wales.

If Hilda's death certificate is obtained it may well include additional information about Mr Cronshaw.

If Hilda's date of birth from the 1938 register was 19 Jan 1917, there is a death listed for a Hilda Cronshaw with that birthdate in 1970.

I would get that death certificate and see what it says about her husband.

Always order BMD certificates either direct from the GRO
    https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/c...ates/login.asp
or from the local Registrar's office.
The GRO will charge you £11.00 for a standard certificate; local offices possibly an extra £1 for postage.
Steer clear of anywhere that charges you more - they're just acting as middlemen because all certificates have to come from either the GRO or the local Registrar's office.

Most reference numbers/details you need to order certificates can be found on FreeBMD
    https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
or on the GRO's own website.
