Default Ancestor I need some help with

    Name: Hugh Fraser
    Born: Abt. 1772
Birth Location: Fife, Scotland or Inverness, Scotland

    Wife: Janet Couper
    Marriage Date: 8 Mar 1798
Marriage Location: St Andrews and St Leonards, Fife, Scotland

    Death: After 1841
    Location: Scotland or Northumberland

in the 1841 Census he was living with his daughter in law and children while her husband James Fraser was still in Scotland. It said in the 1841 census that Hugh Fraser was living in Newcastle Upon Tyne in the year 1841 and his age was 64 and born in Scotland

Im looking for any info on his birth as I cant find a Hugh Fraser in Fife around that time and there are tons in Inverness

I see Hugh was a private in the Sutherland Fencibles when he married Janet Couper in StAndrews & St Leonards Fife in 1798
in 1811 they had a son Robert in same area
in 1814 a son Andrew Leslie
    in 1815 a son Thomas
I havent found James yet and Hughs birth is going to be difficult as you say there are numerous ones for that date and there isnt anything on the marriage record.
you mentioned the 1841 in england was hugh a shoemaker although if he was there are electrol rolls back at least to 1832
sorry not a lot of help yet hard name to search!!

You can tell which 1841 Hugh Fraser is the correct one by in that census his surname was spelt Frazier i also think Hugh served in the 42nd Foot Soldiers and 1st Battalion based on the record of one at that time saying he was born abt 1772 in Carriager, Fife

If you look at the image you linked to, the reference to Fife is actually the person above. I think the correct PoB for this Hugh is Nairn, and it says he was a taylor (tailor) & enlisted 12 March 1798 at Aberdeen, which is only 4 days after 'your' Hugh married in Fife

The only army record I can find for a Hugh Fra*er born c1772 & serving in the 42nd Foot was born in Inverness. He was a Weaver by trade which - if I've understood correctly - matches the 1841 census. This man was discharged in 1802 aged 30 after 9 years service due to a wound in the thigh in Egypt.

It looks like he then served in the 9th Royal Regiment of Veterans 14 Jun 1805 to 15 July 1814. His record with them gives a PoB of Uist near Inverness, and confirms he served with the 42nd Foot 1 Jan 1793 to 18 Mar 1802. However, his place of residence in July 1814 appears to be Stirling, which doesn't correspond to the birth/baptism of Andrew Leslie earlier that year and/or Thomas in 1815, both Fife.

There is another record for a Hugh Fra*er who served in the Fraser Fencibles and also the 71st Foot, but he was 44 in 1802, a labourer, and was discharged 1802 for being old & worn out.

Google tells me that the Sutherland Fencibles - which Hugh was serving in at marriage - were disbanded in 1799, and when son William was baptised that year Hugh's occupation was simply weaver, so I think he was no longer serving at that point.

when you look in Scotspeople for births in 1772 there are only 6

    3 in inverness
    1 in Petty
    1 in Keith
    1 in Gamrie & Macduff
this is where I got the marriage record I had some spare credits but have run out now
the inverness ones have a Hugh Fraser and Mary McKenzie , an Alexander Fraser and Anne Dason and a John Fraser and Katherenie

But the 1841 census hasnt been 'rounded' and says he was 64, so nearer 1777.

I think the 1772 came from the age on the army record, which doesn't appear to be him.
