    Default Service history search

Hi, my Grandfather was in the Royal Airforce during WW2 but never spoke about it, what my family are trying to find out is that he went missing and was presumed dead, my Grandmother was even sent a telegram to inform her that he was missing. However he was found/turned up a few days later, we never found out what happened to him and I was wondering if there is a way to find out and resolve the mystery?

    Hello SimonC46,

    Welcome to British-Genealogy.

Service records for personnel who served after 1922 are still held by the Ministry of Defence. You can apply by sending a cheque for thirty pounds, a copy of the person's death certificate, and the appropriate forms. Link to more details, plus the relevant forms for the different services.

However Covid-19 has meant that the offices have been closed and so there is now a minimum of eighteen months wait before you receive a reply.
