I was only thinking 'Canadian' the other day, good spot Keith.
After looking at the photo again it certainly appears to be 2nd division as you've said.

I wonder if Weston could be his surname? So I would be looking for a James Weston. Initial searches reveal too many possibilities. Still a needle in a haystack.

There seems to be 2 James Weston's in the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF)and 2 with James as middle name. No officers but he could have raised through the ranks.

As we are not sure if he fought in WW1 it's going to be difficult to pin him down. The Battalions that were sent overseas do not tie up with the Battalions that made up the Divisions so making it even more difficult to trace.

Thank you very much for your help. I did look at this list yesterday but saw that the service numbers don’t match Jim’s. I also read that the numbers were changed to four digit numbers on arrival in England in ww1. I will send the picture to each of the battalions in the list you sent and ask if the recognize the cap badge and pin, or have any other info for me. I also left a message with a government dept here but I’m not sure when or if I will get a call back. Any thoughts on where to go from here?

    Default I found him!

I’m pretty sure I’ve found my grandfather. I couldn’t have done it without your help, so thank you!!!!! My father is going to do a DNA test.
