My previous message is a muddled way of saying that HEAFORD and GIFFORD could look the same when transliterated into Cyrillic.

That's right. Thank you for the clarification. Indeed, if it were not for the memoirs of an ancestor, we would consider that the surname is written as Gifford, which, as it turned out, is not correct. The correct spelling of the surname is Heaford.
I will now try to find the descendants of this family.

There are many mentions of Joseph on the internet eg Family search, newspaper reports etc
Joseph was a widower at the time of his marriage to Sarah Elisabeth.He was first married in1822 at Odessa to Mary Haughton Turner.
Siblings of Elisabeth Ann include Alfred 1833, Thomas Edward 1836 and Albert Samuel 1840.Baptised Odessa.

Above website has info and a photo of Thomas Edward.I have broken the link per forum rules.
In 1851 British census Joseph and Thomas are in Edinburgh, Scotland.(You can see for free on freecen website)
In 1861 Joseph, Sarah, Albert and a sister in law Mary A Heaford are in Lambeth Surrey (south London). Ref RG09 piece349 folio2 page 5.
Joseph died in 1864.
Sarah died in 1888 in London.She was still in Lambeth in 1881 census. The census details are on various subscription sites.
