Hello,
I am doing some research on behalf of somebody and it transpires that they are related to the Clan Johnstones of Dumfries, Annandale. Being Scottish gentry there is a fair bit on the internet including an antique book featuring their family tree. It really is like hitting the jackpot, however the family tree produces a conflict with the tree I am assembling using ancestry. The main sources for this are naturally parish records but a key source is a grave on findagrave.
Basically the conflict pertains to the marriage of John of Galabank (book) or
John Johnstone of Gutterbraes and Baillie of Annan (ancestry). In the book he married twice, to a Janet Kirkpatrick (to which he had two daughters according to text) and then Elizabeth Murray. The Findagrave link and further ancestry has one marriage, to an Agnes Holiday/Halliday; from the Agnes marriage another John Johnston was produced (1683 - 1722) and henceforward, towards the person whose genealogy I'm researching.
The book. Relevant text start at pp.142 and appendix with family tree at back ('Johnstones of Gretna'): https://electricscotland.com/webclan...fjohnstons.pdf
Graves (click through relatives below),

My ancestry link: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tr...d=372325112363.
There are so many similarities other than this that it is hard to believe they are different people (a brother Edward, Agnes Graham a mother, etc). Could he have been married three times?
