Thank you very much! I ordered the PDF versions of birth today!

For birth and death certificates the cheapest option is order a PDF version (unless you desperately want a coloured version), and they are delivered electronically. Marriage certificates are not yet available electronically, and so the turn around is slower and they are more expensive.

There is a helpful FAQ section on the GRO website which will give you full details of what to see a certicate.

Do you have access to ancestry.com ? If not there is a free library version which you may be able to access from home through your local library or if you are not under Covid restrictions you can access at the library

I've looked at the two suggested passenger lists, and the one just with the surname Spicer is MRS Spicer onthe image, and the one transcribed as E S? is Mrs E Savill
    Thanks for this lookup.

Thank you christanel! Yes, I do have ancestry.com. Is that where both of this information was found? Apologies, I overlook things while searching sometimes or get overwhelmed with the many 'Johns', for example haha. This helps a lot. I will continue looking into it and hope that the birth info I ordered will reveal even more. John and William should have a brother George Quintin Herbert Spicer also. I order his birth info today as well. Fingers crossed I can tie some things together soon!

    Here is George's baptism
    George Quitin Herbert Spicer
    Baptised 13 May 1866
At St Anne, Limehouse, Tower Hamlets, England
    Father John Spicer, Master Mariner
    Mother Sarah Spicer
    Address Wellington Place, Commercial Road.
    Register Type Parish Register

Yes I am finding these records on ancestry. Sometimes it helps to use wildcards (*) when searching.
I used George Qu*t*n Herbert when searching which brought up the baptism which has been transcribed as Quitin. I also used All Collections as the first search just in case he wasn't born in the UK. You can always alter the search details if you don't get a result.
As you know his birth registration has his first names as Quintin Herbert then the George is added at his baptism.

A couple of sites that may be of use although I haven't found anything relevant yet but have only done a very quick search.

The National Archives of Trinidad and Tobago (which are on Facebook and have blog. The links are at the bottom of the page) https://www.natt.gov.tt/node/4

Thank you. And very helpful to know about the wildcards also! Yes, I've tried those two sites but have never had much luck. I've had to work with a genealogist in Trinidad which has helped a great deal. But now I'm back to England searches for the Spicers (stemming from England before going to Trinidad). It's been tough!

Is there no evidence of a birth record for Elvan in Tobago. Also as I was scrabbling around looking for something/anything helpful it occurred to me that we have been looking at William and John. sons of John b1821 as the possible father of Elvan but it could have been John 1821. He was a mariner and _
Bingo - I have just looked at Sara Spicer, daughter, born c1851 and she married Frederick Titzck on 8 May 1875. Frederick was a Mariner and on the marriage record this is crossed out and Ferdinand written in. Address given 10 Albert? ?? Commercial Rd and Sarah's address 19 S. Paul's Road. Sarah's father is given as John Spicer Harbour Master Tobago. The witnesses are Mary Ann Spicer, G Hudson and John Spicer.
So did John and Sarah take their family to Tobago which is why there is no definite sighting of them in 1871 and later?
So the contenders for father of Elvan still unknown but could have been one of the sons or even the father. Sarah an unlikely mother as she was about 48 in 1874 when Elvan was born but not impossible.

    Brilliant find!

Looks like Quintin Herbert took over the job in later years - in 1899 he is listed as Harbour Master, was in charge of Police and Prison and was also Supervisor of Excise

I could only read this by downloading it as a PDF, but its an obituary for Mr QH Spicer from the Port of Spain Gazette 10 Sep 1910 - page 3 https://ufdc.ufl.edu/UF00094730/01219/3x

Somewhere in this edition there is mention of Josephine Willouchby + Elvan Spicer: https://ufdc.ufl.edu/UF00094730/00822

I don't know how useful they'll be, but all issues from 1825 are available to search: https://ufdc.ufl.edu/UF00094730/01219/allvolumes

Ctrf + F on this document brings up a reference to a John Spicer owning two estates in the Leeward district of Tobago in 1881/2: https://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1362/1/U074368.pdf
