First of all my thanks to Lesley, Tim and the other Moderators for allowing me to post this new thread.
This post draws urgent attention to the proposed building works which would have a major damaging effect on the Bevis Marks Synagogue, London. The Synagogue is a Grade 1 building built in 1701 and the oldest surviving synagogue in the UK. It has national and international importance for Jews and non Jews.
The Sephardi Community have set up a website to enable people to write to the Members of the City of London Corporation to register support for the Bevis Marks Synagogue.
There is an online letter format.
The key issues relating to the proposed building works relate to the construction of a 20 storey tower block and other building within very close proximity to the Synagogue. If the planning was approved the construction would cause major problems for the well being of the Synagogue in terms of light, possible damage to its structure.

There are other key issues relating to the potential impact which are raised on the Save Bevis Marks website-

Cemetery Scribes Blog has also got a new post Save Bevis Marks from Darkness. This post also provides a direct online link to enable people to write to the Members of the City of London Corporation to support the Synagogue.
The post also raises further key examples regarding the issues people can complain about.

On a separate but related topic see the Cemetery Scribes Blog Sephardi Cemetery -Mass Graves and the list of individuals removed from the Neuvo Cemetery and re-interred at Brentwood. The list contains the names of over 5000 bodies buried between 1734-1876 and re-interred in 3 large communal burial pits with no tombstones or recording of where the individuals are buried.
The re-interment was due to the cemetery being sold to Queen Mary University 1973/74 when new buildings were constructed.

The impact these developments has upon the Sephardi Community should not be underestimated and their voice heard more widely.
