    Default Marriage Certificate Information

    Hi,

Hope someone can help with the following question.

I have a marriage certificate from 1961 for a marriage held at St James Catholic church in Twickenham where the bride has listed herself as a widow.

Would the bride have had to produce formal documentation proving her previous husband had died, or could she have just said that without having to provide any formal evidence?

    Many thanks,
    Martin

In most cases it was not until the 1980s or even later that people were asked to provide evidence. In those days people were believed rather than being thought to be cheats and liars.
    Cheers

PS Please remember also the terms widow & widower do not necessarily mean their spouse has died, it could simply mean the couple have seperated from each other.

As we have gained from the past, we owe the future a debt, which we pay by sharing today.
