Default Hello Everyone at British Genealogy

Hello It is nice to become a member of this site.

I began researching my paternal grandfathers family in 2008 and have enjoyed learning about the history, society, customs, laws and geography of the West Riding of Yorkshire and the UK as much as learning about his family.

At the moment I am collecting wills and having difficulty with translation, especially the Latin in probates.

Hope to learn more from you.

    Cheers
    Karen

Welcome to the Brit-Gen forums Karen

In one way I envy people who have ancestors who considerately left wills to help in family research but on the other hand I am so bad at reading old handwriting it would be another frustration added to their 'faults,'
I know we have some members who are so much better than me at deciphering old writing so you only have to post some images to get some help. Here are the instructions for posting images on BG,
To upload an image to the forums the first step is to make sure that you are in Go Advanced mode on the Brit-Gen thread where you want to place the photo. Click on the picture frame in the row of images above the reply box. (6 from the RH side). The box that appears requires a URL address.
You have to upload your photo to a free site which will provide a URL address. I use Postimage which is very simple.
On the home page of Postimage click on 'Choose images' then find and click on the file you want to upload where you have the photo stored on your computer eg Pictures. Then click on the particular folder that holds your picture and Open it. Choose your photo, click on it and click on Open. You are now taken back to the Postimage page where you are given a choice of 9 links. Click on the URL 'Hotlink for forum' Now right click on the URL address and then click on Copy. Go back to the reply box on the Brit-Gen thread and in the URL box right click on your mouse and from the menu click on paste. The URL for your photo is now ready to be posted on the forum along with any information you have typed in to accompany it.
There are other free sites from which to upload images with URL addresses if you want an alternative.

Default Thank you - Nice to meet you

    Hi Christina
Nice to meet you. Thank you for your very helpful instructions on how to post images .

You are right about wills. I thought that wills would help explain family relationships and provide answers to questions . No, they just create more questions.

I see we are neighbours from across the ditch. Hope you are all well and keeping safe.

    Warm regards
    Karen

    Hi Karen
We lived in Oz for 38 years, NSW. Came to NZ in 2016 to be closer to family, so we could hassle them easier However I was born in Lancashire but left there with family in 1961. Lawdy that is a long time ago.
We are not doing too bad at all here. Our area has no reported cases of Covid and only ever has had one case since the whole thing started last year.. WE just have to guard against complacency.

    Hi Christina
Glad to hear that you are doing well re Covid. We are in Brisbane and are responsible safe at the moment?

And you're a Lancashire Lass. Your accent is one I could listen for ever.

Do you relate to the poem.

    I'm a Lancashire Lass
I was born with my heart on my sleeve
    With fire in my soul
    And a mouth I can't control

My Grand father was a heathen - born in Newton Heath in 1898.

    Stay well
    Karen
