Hi Alison, is there a rose in the middle of the star?

    Hi

It looks a bit like the Cheshire Regiment cap badge

Not sure. It is a very poor quality old photograph that I have attempted to enlarge.

    Many thanks

    It's certainly a possibilty.

I just wish the photo was clearer! Many thanks

Are we correct in assuming that it's a WW1 badge, rather than another conflict?

If you have photo software, try increasing the dark/light contrast a little bit. Tt might show a little more detail if it's a bit more contrasty than wanted for a nice photo.
Is any more of his uniform visible in the photo? Style of collar, sleeve badges, etc?

I am presuming it's WW1. It was found literally hidden away in a separate compartment of a writing desk found in my granfather's house after he died (but we believe it originally belonged to his mother.)

I have no idea who the man is but am trying to work out if there is a connection.

I did put the full picture on here a few years ago but have never been able to conclusively work out his regiment.

I will try and upload the full image again - for some reason the computer won't let me attach the link!

    Many thanks
