It’s best not to guess. There was a lot of movement to and from Ireland during the 19th century…. He could have been born in one place and bought a place in another, for example.
How many other children did he have? What happened to the others?

Thank you Lesley and helachau. Interesting information. Elizabeth and John Jardine lived for a while in the Maitland area of Australia after they arrived.

Just a correction for newspaper marriages, in case someone else looking.
On checking NSW BDM I note Sophia Craig married Henry Montague Cockburn, not Montague Dundas Cockburn.
BDM regn No. 699/1840 V1840699 24B COCKBURN HENRY M married CRAIG SOPHIA
